Wastach - Ferguson Canyon

Trail Overview:

Elevation Gain: 2000+ feet
Hiking Time: 1-3 hours
Dog friendly: Yes

Ferguson Canyon is located in the Twin Peaks Wilderness Area above a Cottonwood Heights neighborhood.

From the trailhead, follow the service road past the water tower traversing above the neighborhood. Shortly after the water tower, the trail drops down into the canyon. From here you will begin climbing and after about 1/4 mile you will reach a popular summer climbing area with huge vertical granite walls on either side of the narrow canyon.

The loose and rocky footing crosses a stream a few times which flows much heavier in the spring. Continue uphill as far as you choose. If you do continue up the trail, you will eventually reach a fork. The northern fork leads into the Big Cottonwood watershed and on to Storm Mountain. The southern fork continues up the upper part of Fergusson Canyon.

Ferguson Canyon receives moderate use from hikers, climbers and dog walkers. The canyon is accessible year round and recommended during any season. The stream levels change with the season, but almost always provide enough water for your dogs. The huge rock walls create some great shade during the hot summer months and also look spectacular dusted with snow in the winter.

Getting There:

From Wasatch Boulevard and 7800 South, take Honeywood Cove Drive east into the neighborhood. Turn left at the stop sign onto Top of the World Drive. Proceed to Timberline Drive and turn right. The trailhead is just ahead on your right. There is no parking lot so please be respectful of the neighboring homes.
