Sonya Cotton and Shake Your Peace! are coming to Utah. The folk music bands will be touring Utah by bike. They will start in Provo and travel all the way to Logan with all of their band gear. They will be in Park City at the Cole Sports parking lot on May 13 at 6:00pm to serenade you with their sweet folk tunes. Help them out by pedaling on their bicycle powered PA system while you are there. Now that is some sustainable musicianship.

We have the Kelty Mantra 7 Tent and love it. It fits our family of four comfortably plus, there is plenty of extra room for our two dogs and all our other junk. The tent holds up great to the wind storms we get here in Utah. When we do leave the state and camp in wetter weather we have not had any problems with leakage. Even though it is a really big tent we can set it up in a matter of minutes. Actually, my husband sets it up by himself while I get all the other camping stuff out of the car and keep the dogs and kiddies rounded up. I can’t think of anything negative about it except a small hole in one of the screens but that was our fault. It had nothing to do with the tents quality. Anyways, the picture is from our last camping trip in the fall. We went down to Moab and had just a killer time. I am sorry but I cannot give out the where abouts of our camping spot as it is pretty sweet and I would be really bummed if we pulled up and someone else had snagged it.

Yes, I know this ride is not in Utah but being that my family lives in Pennsylvania I wanted to mention an Endurance Ride that my Mom, Patti Pizzo, had in April. Normally, her annual ride is called The Cranberry Endurance Ride because it is near the cranberry bogs in the New Jersey pine barrens but this year she changed the name to The Mary Lutz Memorial Ride. Her friend Mary died while riding her favorite horse Hoagie on her birthday. I have met Mary several times over the years at different equestrian events. I spent a month with her in 2008 at the World Championships in Dubai. She was the Team Leader for the United States Equestrian Team while we were there, my mother was on the U.S.A. East Coast Team and I was there to help her and sight see.

The beautiful picture below is of my Mom on her horse Spot.

But I am caring for my neighbors two dogs while they are away and they get the Salt Lake Tribune. I read today that Moab is getting a Wal-Mart Super Center. I am not sure how I feel about this. In one way the tax revenues produced by the discount giant will have a good effect on a small town like Moab but in the other hand will it ruin the unique feel you get when and the reason why you visit.

First a little history: The Mormon Pioneer Trail begins in Nauvoo, Illinois and crosses five states before reaching the Great Salt Lake valley. You can trace some of these historical final steps that 70,000 Mormon pioneers made between 1846 - 1869.

The hike: The trail is dirt and follows along a seasonal stream through the woods. Then it heads into the canyon and begins your climb to the pass. Beavers have dammed the stream in places and the canyon attracts quite a bit of wildlife. (moose, mule deer, turkeys and plenty of ground animals) There is about five miles of hiking along this section of the Mormon Pioneer Trail before it concludes in East Canyon. The trail is well worn making it easy to follow and dogs are allowed off leash.

To Get There: Take I-80 east into Parleys Canyon from SLC. Exit at Jeremy Ranch and at the bottom of the ramp turn left. Go left again at the four way stop sign. Take your first right into the Jeremy Ranch Golf Course and follow the road into the neighborhood. Where the road makes a 90 degree right turn continue straight onto the dirt road. Follow this a few miles to the parking lot for the Mormon Pioneer Trail on your left. There is a restroom facility and a group camping area.
