How will the Wasatch Canyons Master Plan affect your dog?
May 12th, 2009 by admin
It has been 20 years since the Wasatch Canyons master plan has been updated. This plan guides landāuse policy for City Creek, Emigration, Red Butte, Parleys, Millcreek, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood Canyons. Three workshops are scheduled for this week. Check out the workshop schedule and make it a priority to attend at least one.
As water resources become more and more scarce, protection of water quality becomes more and more important. But it seems that in Salt Lake County dogs “off leash” are the easiest target to restrict. Is this restriction really scientifically the most important? What about wildlife, septic systems, ski resorts, fertilizers, etc. Do dogs really impact waterways to a level where they should be banned everywhere? Since we treat all water before it is sent to the public for use, what is the real purpose of banning dogs from watershed areas? How are recreational needs for the “off leash” user group balanced against the needs of all the other user groups?- Millcreek F.I.D.O.S.
The Salt Lake Tribune recently published an article about this issue. Check out “New push to protect Wasatch canyons”
Please take the time to attend one of these workshops and voice your opinion on behalf of your canine companion. After all, dogs are only permitted in one canyon half of the time. Are you willing to possibly lose this too?
